What to know before booking
The island sits in a shallow lagoon, so snorkelling is about nurse sharks and rays in the lagoon and guided reef trips rather than a drop-off house reef. The standard Beach and Over Water Villas have no pool; book a Beach Pool Villa or an Over Water Pool Villa if a private pool matters. Surf is best from April to October, and the drier months run November to April.
Who it isn’t for
Couples who want a child-free island should stay across the lagoon at Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, which is adults-only. For a private pool in every villa and a drop-off house reef, look at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas.

Picnic island
Kayak or boat across to Gulhifushi Picnic Island for swimming and lunch at the Tiki Bar, then dinner at Sea Fire Salt.
